Musashi-koyama Onsen shimizu-yu

INTRO

This onsen, established back in 1924, is located in Central Tokyo, close to Ebisu/Meguro and only 15 minutes from Shinjuku. The baths use kuroyu (black water) tapped from natural sources below the city. Additional there is an iron-rich gold water which was made available after the facilities were refurbished in 2007. The onsen also provides a sauna and a rest and relax room with massage chairs on the 2nd floor. The outdoor area - covered with a roof - is the main selling point as it has two outdoor baths (rotenburo) and the larger one uses gold water, set in a garden atmosphere. Though you need to bring your own body wash, shampoo and conditioner as they aren’t provided.

Nearby is the longest covered shotengai (Arcade) in Tokyo, spanning 800 meters with around 250 shops. The arcade is very convenient no mater the weather, summer head or Tokyo rains are pouring, and it provides one of the best shopping experience in Tokyo with several family-owned restaurants and shops offering their goods and services for decades.

Kuroyu is 200 meters deep, a fresh water hot spring that springs from the stratum 1 to 2 million years ago. It is a high-quality, clear, dark amber hot spring with a fine texture among the black hot springs in Tokyo. Rich in humic acid, minerals, and ions, it is a highly effective moor spring that does not deteriorate in spring quality compared to ordinary hot springs and stores fresh mineral components forever.

Golden Hot Water springs from a stratum far deeper than Kuroyu (black water). In the eastern part of the Musashino Plateau, it springs from a depth of 1500 meters in the strata of the Kazusa Group 5 million years ago from the end of the Neogene to the early Pleistocene. It is the first public bath with a deep depth and is also certified as the first recuperation hot spring. It contains iodine that helps treat external wounds.
