Onsen Accessories
TOWEL
It is recommended to bring your own towel (better 2, one for the cleaning and one later to dry yourself). The size should be around 30cm x 80cm so that you can place it behind your back and wash yourself thoroughly. If you plan to have only one visit, opt for the 50-70 Yen rental package (or up to 200 Yen incl a small and sauna towel) which is offered additional to the entrance fee. Otherwise spend eg 280 Yen for a towel from Lawson supermarket (picture above). The towel is for washing, for resting your head when you lay down in an Onsen (don’t let the towel touch the water though), and to cover your xxx when walking around or sitting in the sauna or laying on a bench.
SAUNA FOAM PAD (OPTIONAL)
I prefer to use for the sauna a foam pad so that I do not sit in the sweat of other people. Some Onsen provide plastic seat pads in front of the sauna which you can take as well (rinse with water before and after usage).
SMALL BAG
All placed in a small, optional water resistant, bag which you take with you into the bath facilities.
SHAMPOO AND SOAP
Not every Onsen provides shampoo and soap. Better have a spare one in your bag.
TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE
Many people also do their oral health care in the Onsen, not only their body. So bring a tooth brush/paste travel case with you eg found in Lawson supermarket for 320 Yen.
