COVID-19 Special

Chose an onsen where they measure your temperature

Some Onsen take the temperature of the customers during entry, e.g. Thermaeyu in Shinjuku, Enoshima Island Spa in Enoshima, Saitama Seiganji, Myojin No Yu, or Sayano Yu Dokoro in Tokyo. So not only the “Super Spa” Onsen. You can filter by “Despite COVID-19” in the “Best Baths 2021” Section of this website.

chose an onsen which is big and open and rather “Pricey”

Some Onsen reduced the amount of seats in the sauna area. Onsen like Daikokuyu have an outside bath but the inside room is quite closed (no open windows), compared to e.g. Haginoyu. The facility of Haginoyu is huge and it provides a lot of open window, fresh air flow, and a partial outside bath. Even better (and more beautiful) is the Saitama Seiganji Hot Spa with its big outside area covering 7 different bath types.

Try to avoid narrow spaces and closed rooms.

Also the more “expensive” onsen have often less people e.g. the Somei Sakura Onsen.

Chose the time of the day wisely

Nothing can be ever guaranteed, but try to avoid evenings and weekends to avoid the crowds and rather go e.g. during noon-time, early afternoon or late (after 10pm).

Use your towel to cover your mouth/nose

You can wrap your towel around your head so that your mouth/nose is covered and you breath through the towel e.g. when sitting in the sauna.
